Industry Canada’s sustainable development page contains resources for business, industry, and consumers, as well as the department’s sustainable development strategy.

Natural Resources Canada
The major natural resource department of the federal government, it provides information on the environment, particularly in relation to energy, minerals, and forestry. (http//www.nrcan.gc.ca)

Statistics Canada
The nation's authoritative information centre on a very wide range of issues, including environmental trends. Produces Human Activities and the Environment report. (www.statcan.ca)

International Development Research Centre
A public corporation created by the federal government that helps people living in less developed nations find solutions to economic and environmental problems through information sharing. (www.idrc.ca)

Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development
This is part of the office of Canada's Auditor General and is responsible for evaluating the performance of the federal government. (www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/domino/cesd_cedd.nsf/html/menu_e.html)

National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy
Created in 1989 to be a centre of ideas in Canada on how to achieve sustainable development. (www.nrtee-trnee.ca)

 


UNITED NATIONS

World Summit on Sustainable Development
In September 2002, people from around the planet will meet in Johannesburg to assess progress since the Earth Summit and to set clearer goals for sustainable development.

UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs
This department deals with a broad range of sustainability issues. It maintains documents from the 1992 Earth Summit, including the text of Agenda 21, on-line. The Sustainable Development site is: www.un.org/esa/sustdev/

UN System-wide Site for Sustainable Development
A focus for the national information provided by Governments to the Commission on Sustainable Development. It includes progress reports on sustainability from many countries, including Canada. (www.un.org/esa/agenda21/natlinfo/)

United Nations Environment Programme
The principal UN organization responsible for collecting and disseminating information about the global environment. It has helped negotiate a number of global environmental agreements. (www.unep.org)

United Nations Development Programme
The world's largest multilateral source of grant technical assistance for sustainable human development. It co-ordinates UN human development activities. (www.undp.org/)

Human Development Report
An annual assessment of the state of human development globally, it ranks countries by various indices. Canada has frequently topped the list of countries. (www.undp.org/hdro/report.html)

United Nations Population Division
The UN centre of statistics on population numbers. Part of the UN Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis. Operates United Nations Population Information Network (POPIN). (www.undp.org/popin/popin.htm)

United Nations Population Fund
Its role is to assist developing countries in dealing with population issues. (www.unfpa.org/)

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
Has information on children's issues, including environmental issues. (www.unicef.org/)

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Has a global mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living and to improve agricultural productivity. This UN agency has information on global agriculture, fishery and forest issues. (www.fao.org/)

World Health Organization
This UN organization is the world authority on health issues. Publishes the World Health Report. (www.who.ch)

International Council for Local Government Initiatives
Created by the United Nations to foster local sustainability. This Toronto-based organization is a source of information on cities and the environment and sustainability. It a supporter of the Sustainability Reporting Program. (www.iclei.org)

International Institute for Sustainable Development
This organization has a major web site on environment and sustainable development in Canada and abroad. (iisd.ca)

Commission for Environmental Cooperation
Created after the signing of North American Free Trade Agreement, it reports on environmental issues in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. (www.cec.org)

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC]
This organization advises the world on climate change issues from the perspective of hundreds of scientists in many countries. (www.ipcc.ch/)

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD]
An organization of the world's developed nations. Keeps excellent statistics on a wide range of issues, including environment. (www.oecd.org/subject/sustdev/)

International Society for Ecosystem Health
This organization of experts approaches the issue of sustainability from the perspective of maintaining ecosystem health as a prerequisite to having healthy human societies.

World Bank
A major international organization that funds development projects in less industrialized nations. It publishes reports on environment, economic, and human development. (www.worldbank.org)

Biomimicry
This organization, built on ideas from author Janine Benyrus, explains the concept of looking at how nature creates, and how humans can learn from nature to make our products in a less-destructive manner. (www.biomimicry.net)

Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention

The Commons: An independent Open Society Initiative
An organization that supports public discussions of the issues and choices of governance and decision making that impact on sustainability and social justice, in both the private as well as in the public sector. (http://ecoplan.org/)

Conference Board of Canada
Policy institute whose clients include Canadian business, government and public sector organizations. Partners include organizations with an interest in the Canadian economy, public policies and organizational practices. A partner of the Sustainability Reporting Program. (www2.conferenceboard.ca/)

The Ecological Footprint Network
The site provides background and many links to measurements of our “Ecological Footprint,” which measures what we consume from nature, compared to how much biologically productive land and water is available. (www.ecofoot.net)

The Global Scenario Group
This independent, international group was created by the Stockholm Environment Institute to examine the prospects for world development in the 21st century. The Boston-based GSG uses a number of techniques, including scenarios. GreenFacts.org
An independent, multi-stakeholder non-profit organization based in

A national network of eco-minded individuals that links people to help achieve environmental sustainability. The site provides environmental news, events and a directory of Canadian environmental web sites.

Helio International
This research-orientated, non-profit, international, non-governmental organization  monitors and reports on the contribution of energy systems to an improved quality of life. It also reports on the implementation of relevant environmental Conventions and principles. Learning for a Sustainable Future

The Natural Step
This approach to planning for sustainability was developed in the late 1980s in response to growing concerns about the public health problems resulting from  increasing toxins in the environment and current societal resource use practices. Pembina Institute
An independent organization workintg in three major areas: energy and the environment; environmental economics; and sustainable resource management. (www.pembina.org/)

Pollution Probe

Population Action International
A nongovernment organization that advocates policies and programs that slow population growth, and produces in-depth reports on the links between world population growth and sustainability issues. (www.populationaction.org)

Redefining Progress
Does important work on the Genuine Progress Indicator, an alternative to GDP as a measure of a nation's true wealth, and Ecological Footprint, a measure of our impact on the environment. (www.rprogress.org/)

Rocky Mountain Institute
An entrepreneurial, nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources. Good source of information on innovative technologies and energy conservation. (www.rmi.org/)

SD Gateway
The SD Gateway integrates the online information developed by a network of some of the world's leading sustainable development institutes. (sdgateway.net)

Sustainable Development Research Institute
An important centre of expertise on sustainability, based at the University of British Columbia, SDRI provides information on environmentally unsustainable behaviour, and ecologically and socio-economically desirable futures. (www.sdri.ubc.ca/)

Sustainable Development Information Service
Country-level data and information on sustainable development and the environment. A collaborative effort by the World Resources Institute, the World Conservation Union and the International Institute for Environment and Development. (www.wri.org/wri/sdis/)

Sustainable Measures

World Resources Institute
Produces a wide range of information, including the biennial World Resources Report, a compendium of global environment and development statistics, in collaboration with UN agencies. World Resources Report available on Web site. (www.wri.org)

Worldwatch Institute

World Wildlife Fund Living Planet Index

This part of York University has a mandate to promote the application of the principles and practices of sustainability throughout society including in the public sector, the private sector, the civil sector, and in education.
