The goal of the initiative is to identify and develop a set of departmental environmental indicators and to follow up and co-ordinate their application and use. The conceptual model used for both the State of the Environment Reports and all of the other indicators is the driving force-state-response framework.
The project objectives are to create development indicators for the ecosystem and the black spruce forest populations. The model of forest dynamics is based on data gathered by researchers on black spruce forest regeneration and also derived from the post-fire patterns of regeneration in ten non-managed forests. This model was used to develop tools to predict post-fire forest regeneration and strategies to bring them into production again. It is also the basis of work to develop indicators.
The objective is to integrate current scientific knowledge and analyze it with a view to diagnosing the health of the St. Lawrence using the most recent available data. The diagnosis of the health of the St. Lawrence is based on a series of environmental indicators associated with the river's main features. These are grouped according to four main components of the river ecosystem: bed, water, biological resources and uses associated with human activities. The focus is on physio-chemical, biological and socioeconomic aspects of the river. Almost thirty indicators on the state of the environment have been developed so far as part of the State of the Environment Report on the St. Lawrence River characteristics.
The objective is to implement Hydro-Québec's commitment to sustainable development and measure this commitment using environmental indicators. The indicators cover a range of activities. They measure the impacts generated or prevented by Hydro-Québec activities and the improvements made. The focus is on the electrical power sector, renewable resources, the 3 R's, participation in Quebec's economic and social development and pollution reduction. Twenty indicators have been developed to date, covering various types of activities over a three year period. |
