The goal of this initiative is to produce a series of reports about the quality of life in Ontario using the Quality of Life Index (QLI). Specifically, the objectives are to work with community partners to produce local QLI reports; raise public awareness about issues affecting the social, health, economic, and environmental dimensions of the quality of community life; mobilize community resources and support to address issues arising from the QLI; and use QLI results to promote public discourse about policy issues affecting the quality of life. Using the model of Sustainable Human Development, as promoted by UNDP and IISD, four dimensions of the quality of life have been established - social, health, economic, environmental. Using a set of research criteria, three indicators were selected for each of these four areas for inclusion in the composite QLI. Reports are made based on the increase or decrease in the total QLI, as well as Progress and Setbacks, looking at each of the twelve indicators. Provincial and local QLIs, using the same methodology and data set, provide a comparative framework for analysing trends in the quality of life over time, as well as provincial-local and community-community comparisons. The provincial QLI report is issued twice yearly, while local indices are calculated in various communities across Ontario. The following local organizations in Ontario have produced quality of life reports with assistance from OSDC and SPNO):
This site provides a look at a number of key issues and trends in the world's largest set of lakes. It tracks changes in conditions since the low point in the late 1960s, measuring a number of improvements in pollution levels and wildlife recoveries.
