Canada needs a new
industrial revolution

Environment Minister Stéphane Dion has called for Canada to develop a sustainable economy that reconciles its economic growth with the limits of its environment.

Mr. Dion wants the country to undergo what he calls a new Industrial Revolution, in which the environment is a key driver of creativity, innovation and global competitiveness.

Economic success has often come from the rapid exploitation of natural resources. In the future, industries must be clean and efficient, using the best industrial practices in the world. Otherwise, Canada will not only suffer environmental losses and see a reduction in the quality of life. It also risks being shut out of important trade markets if it does not adhere to the new tougher rules about environmentally sustainable business that other countries demand.

The federal government is seeking to develop this approach as a national strategy, in concert with other governments as well as with business and other parts of society, including consumer groups and non-government organizations. It is creating a series of permanent sector sustainability tables that will bring together a variety of stakeholders.
